If you want a team that is productive and can rise to any challenge then it’s fundamental to create safety. What do I mean by that? You want your team to feel empowered to think creatively about a problem or project, you want them to think outside the box, you want them to “fail fast”. Well all of those things rely on you giving them the safety to do that. If the first time they fail you belittle them or even worse shout at them then they are not going to put themselves out there again.
Safety even comes down to giving your team room to challenge you. You may be their manager but that doesn’t mean you naturally have all the answers. You have the power to enable them to challenge and work collaboratively, it’s just about setting the right tone.
