This weeks tips are going to focus on creating a good team spirit and atmosphere that is conducive with your team being productive.
There is a lot of research into the 4 stages of team performance as described by the Tuckman Model: forming, storming, norming, performing. Every team or project group will go through these stages as they come together to form a cohesive unit.
So how can you move your team through these stages and into the final and perhaps most productive stage of performing? For me it’s about helping your individuals to bond, to find those common areas of interest or points of unity.
You can often help this with social events such as a quick trip to the pub after work or group lunch. But often it’s just about giving your team room to talk, chat and have banter. If your team is spread across locations, create a shared Slack, Skype or Hangout where they can share jokes, thoughts or just catch up on the latest office gossip.
By creating the environment and room to connect as individuals you will often find that without any further encouragement from you or force jollity that they naturally find ways to fit as a unit.
